when did everything die?
when did flowers seep into the
dirt and birds become the sky?
when did the wind become still?
when did it all escape my mind?
when did it all go black and white?

how selfish am I
to live this life,
to see through these eyes,
to want to die?how selfish am I
to laugh with ease
to seek joy when
there is suffering?how selfish am I
to strive to calm
the storm inside?
is it selfish
to survive?
your name on my tongue
(the only fruit i will not eat)
is overripe,
no longer sweet– past it’s prime
and overdue–
my heart no longer aches for you.
there are no words that i could write
to fully repaint that summer night:
the grass deep green, the sky blood red
the thoughts of death flooding my headthe ghost of your warm hands in mine
mem’ries of green eyes and lips of wine
the only thing i wanted to do
was tangle myself back up in youi sat and watched the city lights
the day slowly melting to night
the way the moon shone– like your face–
drowned the city lights in graceyou left no beauty when you went
my mind gone numb, my heart left spent
i lost control, then came the tears
alone with all my greatest fearsthose tears i shed, the guilt i felt
can’t change the cards that i’ve been dealt
and with each step your face will fade
one day i’ll breathe without you, unafraid.
tucking flowers behind your ears
watching the sun dance in the sky
waiting for the air to clear
i never want to leave your side.from this hill we see the town
i twist my fingers between yours
to keep myself from falling down
because your love my soul secures.and when the earth begins to shake
fear will not grip my stuttering heart
because with you i know i’m safe
though the world begins to fall apart.
i don’t want to lose this
but don’t know what to say
to make you believe that
i want you
to stay.
you can change your hair and change your eyes
but your outer shell’s just a disguise
that’s soft to touch but hard to break through,
does anybody really know you?
if ever you feel far from home,
please know that you are not alone.
for I, too, have wandered far
and made my bed among the stars.and if you know not where to go,
look to the skies, the ground below
and know another pair of eyes
is seeking out the same advice.and if your voice shakes when you speak,
please know it does not make you weak.
look at the sun– see how it shines?
you, too, were made from dust divine.if the future makes you doubt
your life will figure itself out,
be still– the universe knows all
and does not let her dear ones fall.and when from wand’ring you’ve had your fill
and yearn for your soul to be still,
look inside you to find peace–
the waves within will finally cease.

I am swimming in a sea
of crippling uncertainty,
and it is my life’s greatest fear
that paralyzed, I’ll drown in here.
I’m struggling to stay afloat
while anxious tears constrict my throat.
Afraid there’s nothing I can do,
a merciless god I’m praying to.
No matter how I push and kick,
the sea ignores me and
I sink.
He’s Over There
She’s sitting in her rocking chair,
her daughter at her feet.
Her hands braid the child’s hair,
who, with her voice so sweet
Asks her mother with a start
to tell the story, please
of the first boy to steal her heart
and make her weak at the knees.
She smiles and looks across the room,
remembering her young and handsome groom,
and points to him sitting in his chair,
“That’s him, my love. That’s him, right there.”
